Going Native

Walking through the cars at Trastevere it is difficult to ignore the infinite-concentrate on concrete things. You just can't put it out of your mind; it flashes before your eyes, annoying and gnawing at you near white light. Sometimes the mind defocuses from daily tasks-Microsoft Outlook, Annual Performance Reports-into the soup that is where the emotion lives-the foggy incense of ideas you just can't quantify. It feels like death or the womb, or divine love. Is this what you were afraid of?

Something about De Chirico

Almost De Chirico, but not quite De Chirico. Rising up from the ground, a surrealist tower: It's the place just before the desire, that great endorphin rush that carries you away; the place of emptiness at the precipice - that's the place where you want to stay.

Lie there and pause and let the nothing comfort you into a deep hollow sleep. Fill your days so that you are not filled with desire, so that you don't seek it out like a drug. Even if you fill your days with absurdity, it is sometimes enough to calm the mind. Still better not to think at all.

Hope Elizabeth Traficanti

Hope has lived in Rome, Italy since 2002 and established this site in 2006 to share her writing on Italy and beyond with friends, colleagues and anyone who cares to make her famous.

She also writes documentaries, including 'The Good Sheikh: Ashore in Yemen', which aired recently on Al Jazeera International's current-affairs programme People & Power; and 'Viminale', a history doc which aired on RAI and other European broadcasters in 2005. Her most recent doc project, 'Sex and the Eternal City: Love in Italy' will hopefully air soon somewhere where you can see it. It's real good.
